By the second half of the 1880s, Europe was enjoying a period of relative calm. Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary had been allied for more than 3 years. The serious trouble had occurred the year before in the Balkans. A Bulgarian invasion threatened to topple the reign of Serbia’s Prince Milan. Austrian intervention halted the Bulgarians and forced Serbia to make peace, ceding territory to Bulgaria. Bulgarian King Alexander later abdicates and is replaced in 1887 by Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg.
These were tumultuous times in Africa. Across the continent Europeans sought control of various regions. In 1885, the British were struggling to maintain control of Egypt and the Sudan. In a battle made famous in modern films, the British garrison was wiped out at Khartoum as they awaited reinforcements. On the day they finally arrived, the garrison’s commander, General Gordon was killed. The Egyptian campaign continued across North Africa. Also in 1885, Prince Bismark gained a strong African presence by obtaining control of many lands including a strip of coastal West Africa. Germany also managed to keep the British and French from gaining autonomy, in the Congo Basin, when they negotiated an agreement to make the area in which all were free to trade.
In the United States, the mid 1880s were marked with worker unrest across the country. In 1886 a huge riot broke out in Chicago’s Haymarket Square. In the West, much of workers anger was focused on Chinese immigrants. Many were killed by angry mobs in Washington and Wyoming. In 1886, the symbol of freedom and opportunity to many European immigrants, the Statue of Liberty, was dedicated in New York Harbor. Also in 1886, Apache leader, Geronimo surrendered in Arizona.
Outside of the United States, Canada completed its transcontinental railroad in 1885. In Mexico the reign of Porfirio Diaz (or his hand-picked puppet, Manuel Gonzalez) was into its second decade. Diaz would rule Mexico into well into the 20th Century. Throughout the 1880’s, the French were attempting one of the most ambitious engineering feats of the century. They were trying to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. After a decade the project is bankrupt and work on the canal did not begin in earnest again until the early part of the 20th Century when America took over and completed the ill-fated project.
This unusual and beautiful lithographed color map shows the nations of the world and focuses on the British Empire of Queen Victoria. Sea trade routes and distances are also noted as well as ocean currents. The insets show the world’s races, climate and religions.
If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old print or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique prints allow you to present someone a piece of the past.
