 1872 Hand-Colored Antique Map of Kansas, Nebraska,
Colorado, Dakota, Wyoming, & Montana

In 1872, Ulysses S. Grant defeated New York newspaper editor Horace Greeley to be reelected President of the United States. Americans been able to travel across the continent by railroad via the Union and Central Pacific for a mere 3 years. The Northern Pacific line is under construction. Just a year before this map was published Congress declared all treaties with Indian tribes void and made Native Americans wards of the state. In the years of 1871 and 1872, fires swept the nation. In Wisconsin and Michigan more than 2 million acres were scorched and 1000 people perished. The great Chicago fire killed 300 and left 90,000 homeless. For 3 days in 1872 Boston burned with more than 800 buildings destroyed. Just after this map was published, the nation's first national park was established at Yellowstone.
